What is Meatless Monday?

Meatless Monday is a global movement with a simple message: one day a week, cut the meat.

The goal of the movement is to reduce meat consumption by 15% for human health and the health of the planet.

Launched in 2003, it’s a non-profit initiative.

They provide information, news, recipes and free promotional materials to help individuals, restaurants, schools, hospitals, food companies and entire communities start each week with a commitment to eating healthy, environmentally-friendly, meat-free meals.

Now in its second decade, Meatless Monday is embraced in over 40 countries, in over 20 languages. It demonstrates the universal appeal of an idea that is simple to understand and easy to do.

A strong brand.

Meatless Monday has a Moz Domain Authority of 65 and ranks for over 5600 keywords. Moz also reports that top domains that link to the brand include publishers like the Huffington Post.

An example of a question that this site ranks for is: “Who has good veggie burgers?” That’s a handy question to connect with if you’re in the food business!

According to ahrefs, their website has over 285,700 backlinks. That’s pretty impressive for a niche campaign brand!

You should join to:

  1. Show customers that you care about their health – and the health of the environment.
  2. Attract more customers on Mondays.
  3. Capitalize on the growing trend for meatless dishes.
  4. Demonstrate a leadership role in promoting sustainable food.
  5. Prosper from serving meatless dishes that may cost less than their meat counterparts.

How can we work as ambassadors?

As official Meatless Monday ambassadors, we can help you connect your brand with theirs.

We also get access new brand materials, such as social media graphics, videos, and more before they’re made public. That means we can help you prepare your own marketing so it’s ready to go when the campaigns launch. The campaign provides excellent collateral and guides to support businesses that join up.

We can also post, share and tag any organizations that join, using #MeatlessMonday @meatlessmonday

The 100+ year history of Meatless Monday

Meatless Monday is not a new concept. During World War I, the U.S. Food Administration encouraged families to reduce consumption of critical foods to aid the war effort. “Meatless Monday” and “Wheatless Wednesday” were introduced to encourage Americans to help with this. The result was overwhelming. More than 13 million families signed a pledge to adhere to the national meatless and wheatless days.

The campaign returned during World War II for similar reasons. After the war,  President Harry S. Truman continued the campaign to help feed war-ravaged Europe.

Sid Lerner revived Meatless Mondays in 2003. He achieved this in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for a Livable Future.

Reintroduced as a public health awareness campaign, the initiative is working to stop preventable illnesses associated with excessive meat consumption.

Since 2003, Meatless Monday has grown into a global movement. It is powered by a network of participating individuals, schools, hospitals, workplaces and restaurants around the world. They’ve also partnered with leading public health schools like the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health and the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.

Why has it been so successful? Firstly, the simplicity of Meatless Monday’s message is easy to embrace, talk about and share around the world. Secondly, the health benefits of reducing meat consumption have become regular stories in the global news outlets.
